OBSTERIC & GYNAECOLOGY IN MALAYSIA

Dr Cecilia Wong is a full–time Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Assunta Hospital in Petaling Jaya since 2012. She obtained her medical degree (MD) from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1998 and completed her internship in Hospital Teluk Intan, Perak.


She commenced specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology under the Masters Program from the University Malaya in 2001. She had worked in Alor Setar Hospital, Kuala Lumpur Maternity Hospital and University Malaya Medical Centre before being awarded the Masters in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2005. She was the first recipient for the TA Sinnathuray Academic Award for the First Prize Medallist in the Masters Obstetrics and Gynaecology Conjoint Examination, Malaysia.


She then returned to the Maternity Hospital Kuala Lumpur as a clinical specialist in 2005 and was gazetted as specialist under the Ministry of Health in 2006. This gave her the opportunity to be involved with the training of junior medical staff and to consolidate her training.  Dr Cecilia then joined the newly built Sungai Buloh Hospital as part of the O&G Consultant team in 2006. Her role included responsibilities as an obstetrician in the new birthing suite.


Dr Cecilia Wong went for her urogynaecology training at the Women Health's Centre, Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia as a Clinical Research Gynaecology Fellow of University of Adelaide  in 2007. During her stint there under Dr. Paul Duggan, she published a peer review article on the Effect of Solifenacin on Overactive Bladder. She presented her research at the RANZCOG ASM Meeting held in Gold Coast in 2007.


She also worked as Senior Registrar at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. During this time Dr Cecilia spent eighteen months working in the general O&G and urogynaecology unit. She also gained valuable experience in the specialized Vulva Clinic, Preterm Clinic and Fetomaternal Clinic.


During her stay in USA in 2009, she was given an opportunity to further her knowledge in urogynaecology with Dr John Miklos at Atlanta Urogynaecology Center, Georgia, USA. However, she had to forgo the opportunity due to heavy commitment to her young family to help her two boys to settle in the States. Dr Cecilia understands the challenges of parenthood especially for a working woman. This experience has shaped her focus to provide a professional yet a personalized service to each patient. 


She is a member of various societies which include Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia OGSM (Life Member), Malaysian Medical Association (Life member) and Academy of Medicine (Malaysia). She ensures that she provides the latest recommended treatment to patients by regularly investing her time reading UpToDate medical website, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) website, Fetal Medicine Foundation, etc.
